Strongly condemns the horrible act of brutal killings of lawyers from The National Union of People’s Lawyer (NUPL) & journalists in Philipina
Progressive’s Lawyers Union (Serikat Pekerja Hukum Progresif/SPHP) as Indonesia people’s lawyer organization based in Yogyakarta City, strongly condemns in the strongest possible terms the dreadful massacre and the horrible act of brutal killings of innocent civilians including its two lawyer (Attys. Concepcion Brizuela and Attys. Cynthia Oquendo ), members of The National Union of People’s Lawyer (NUPL), and scores of women and journalists in Maguindanao on Monday 23 November.
Since 2001, credible reports indicate that 1,118 persons have been extrajudicially killed, 204 disappeared, 1,026 tortured, and 1,932 illegally arrested. Scores of others fell victims to various forms of human rights violations by elements associated with the government. We find these continuing attacks on human rights simply totally unacceptable. it’s mean Philippines has indeed also become one of the worst places for attacks on members of the legal profession.
As we know that Lawyers are essential agents of the administration of justice, and journalists are an institution in a civilized society. If lawyers and journalists are brutally murdered while in the performance of their duties, and in broad daylight at that, democracy is dead, plain and simple.
Progressive’s Lawyers Union (Serikat Pekerja Hukum Progresif/SPHP) will continue to firmly support the responses of NUPL, in regard to these killings and attacks, to the creation of an independent and credible special court that will handle this cases.
Progressive’s Lawyers Union (Serikat Pekerja Hukum Progresif/SPHP) demand in the strongest possible manner that justice be accorded to the innocent victims,particularly to lawyers members of NUPL and scores of journalists in Philipine.
Also we urge call on all its member associations and BAR associations all over the world to spread the truth on these issues;
Attys. Iwan Kurniawan
